• The United States Grills (Scott Catalogue #s 79 // 144A)
Briefly, the Grills are 'punches', in the form of pyramids that were pressed into the printed stamp paper in an attempt to prevent reuse of stamps, the idea being that pressure applied to remove a cancellation would tear apart paper that had been weakened by the grill. The letters assigned to Grills—A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I and Z—do not describe the shape of the grill; rather, they help us identify a given configuration; for example, instead of stating "grill with points up, about 18 x 15 millimeters, counting 22 x 18 points within that area" we say "B" Grill.
20 information-packed pages, complete with high definition photos—including stamp fakes—based on the expert writing of Wm. L. Stevenson and Lester G. Brookman. $12.00

The Scott Specialized Catalogue—the most widely used guide to United States stamps and their values—made a major change in the listing of the “I” Grills.
In addition to this Grills Manual Sample Page, you also can access an article on what the “I” Grills are and why they may be ready for a significant increase in value as a result of the Scott listing change.
